Why Men Lose Hair and What Can Be Done
Understand the possible causes before choosing your next step.

Start with the cause
Hair loss is not a single condition. Hereditary hair loss is common, but illness, stress, medication, and other conditions can also be involved. The American Academy of Dermatology [1] explains why identifying the cause is an important first step. [3]
Looking at a photograph or reading a product page cannot reliably establish a diagnosis. Notice when the change began and whether it is gradual, sudden, patchy, or accompanied by scalp symptoms.
Prepare for a conversation
Before an appointment, note any recent illnesses, changes in medication, or other symptoms. You might also write down what matters to you: understanding the cause, maintaining your current hair, or discussing appearance options.
Useful questions to ask
- What is the likely cause, and are tests needed?
- What benefits are realistic for me?
- What side effects and ongoing commitments should I understand?
- What happens if I stop a treatment?
Understand treatment limits
Options depend on diagnosis. The AAD’s treatment overview [2] describes treatments used for different causes, including medications in appropriate cases. Their suitability and results vary. Do not use someone else’s prescription or assume a supplement treats the underlying cause. [4] [5]
Caution: Sudden or patchy hair loss, scalp pain, or other new symptoms warrant medical assessment. This article cannot tell you which treatment to use.
Make an informed choice
You do not have to buy anything immediately. Ask for a written explanation of the options, give yourself time to decide, and be cautious about guaranteed results. Choosing a different hairstyle or deciding not to treat hair loss can also be valid personal choices.
